In a large bowl, whisk the sugar into the melted butter until combined.
Whisk in the eggs and vanilla.
Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
Fold the dry ingredients slowly into the large bowl.
Mix in the chocolate chunks and caramels, chopping the caramels into smaller bits if needed. [See pictures below.]
Preheat the oven to 325° F.
Cut out a small, square piece of parchment paper and place it in the bottom of the 9 x 9 pan.
Pour the batter into the pan. If necessary, you can use a rubber spatula to spread the batter out, allowing it to cook more evenly.
Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a knife comes out clean.
